Mendocino Area Directory: MendocinoMendocino's appeal for the contemporary traveler results from a serendipitous blend of its contemporary arts and culture with its natural scenic splendor and historic lumber town roots. The town perches atop a high bluff, surrounded on three sides by the wild Pacific Ocean punctuated by rugged offshore rocks, tiny coves and abundant sea tunnels. The east or fourth side offers a ragged forest skyline, a verdant backdrop bisected by the deep canyon of placid Big River. Add to this an ever-changing climate of swirling foggy mists, crystalline blue skies and raging winter storms that coax both natural flora and cultivated gardens into wondrous profusion of growth and colors, and the result is one of the most soul-stirring landscapes on earth. Mendocino's dramatic natural setting was not what earned it the "Jewel of the North Coast" designation. After its founding in 1852, Mendocino City served for 30 years as the primary supplier of redwood lumber to booming California and as one of several main lumber sources through boom and bust times into the 1920s. Mendocino redwood built much of San Francisco, then rebuilt it after numerous fires and the Great Earthquake of 1906. Other Mendocino lumber became timbers for Sierra gold mines, ties for the burgeoning railroads of the west, and even went around the world, building new cities in Australia and railroads in South America. Most remarkable today is that so much of this little city survived intact through the 30-year period of neglect following the closing of its sawmill in the 1930s. Mendocino endured thanks to a surplus of community pride and the sheer persistence of the few residents who refused to move on. Still, by the 1950s, the jewel was tarnished and tattered - many buildings sagged from neglect, and weathered and warped boards were far more prevalent than the bright paint you see today. By 1960 a new generation had begun to discover Mendocino's charms. Urban exiles, many of them artists and writers, trickled into town. The newcomers formed an uneasy alliance with the proud oldtimers and began building a new life for the town and for themselves. Today Mendocino has regained its early prosperity because it draws visitors from around the world who come to marvel at the town's magnificent setting and its historic buildings that so poignantly recall another era. People come to browse in the eclectic mix of shops and galleries, many within view of the sparkling Pacific Ocean, or take a class at the Mendocino Art Center. And they come to enjoy some of the finest, most relaxing inns to be found anywhere in the world. So many people visit in summer and on holiday weekends that convenient parking is at a premium and solitude sometimes seems scarce. But one can always find solitude by wandering out along the glorious headlands to contemplate the wild ocean and rugged coast, or strolling a back street to admire gardens and houses. Some discover solitude during the sleepy winter or the quiet weekdays of spring and autumn, when Mendocino still feels like an undiscovered jewel and quiet can be found in a saunter along Main Street.
