Mendocino Area Directory: AlbionModern Albion, sometimes referred to as the Albion Nation in deference to the independent spirit of its residents, offers an eclectic mix of visitor facilities and local commerce in a setting distinguished by the deep canyon of the Albion River and the towering wooded ridges. To the east, Albion Ridge Road leads to the old part of town just up the road, where you will find a hardware store, post office and grocery store. The modern center of Albion perches on the high bluffs south of the Albion river. Residential neighborhoods stretch east along albion ridge, where several ranchers and farmers settled after 1870. Other portions of the little town lie north across the river bridge and down along the tidal flats of the river, where Albion first began and a small commercial fishing fleet operates today. The Albion River Bridge spans the steep canyon at the river’s mouth. The historic bridge, constructed in 1944, crosses 120 feet above the placid river. steel and reinforced concrete were unavailable during World War II, so the bridge was built of salvaged wood. This is the last wooden bridge remaining on the shoreline highway. Immediately north of the bridge, look to the east for Albion River North Side Road, which leads down to the tidal flats beside the river where you will find a small harbor and a campground.
